LABORATORY RULES. Scientist learn about the natural world through research and investigation. Much work in science is done in laboratories. Scientist also work in natiral environments. Regardless of where they work, scientist must work follow safety guideline to protect themselves and others from harm.
Glassware, heat sources and chemicals are common materials found in a sceince laboratory. These materials can be dangerous if not used and handled properly. bellow are guidelines you should always follow when working in a science laboratory.
- Never work in a laboratory unless a teacher is present.
- Follow all directions exactly as they are given to you. If warnings are indicated by symbols, be sure you understand the meanings of the symbols before you beging the investigation.
- Know the locations and proper use of all emergency equipment such as fire extinguishers, fire blankets, fume hoods,and the emergency eyewash station.
- Always wear shoes and the appropiate clothes, (No shorts, or sandals allow). Hair tide no loose.
- Appropiate LABORATORY ATTIRE includes: Eye Protection. GOGGLES. Avoid wearing contact lenses. Clothing. Always wear a LAB COAT OR APRON. Gloves. wear protective plastic or RUBBER GLOVES for handling chemicals or organisms, BECAREFUL when handling hot objects, use heat-resistant gloves.
- Keep your work area neat and organized.
- Never bring food or drink into the laboratory.
- Always wash your hands thoroughly at the end of an investigation.
- Notify your teacher immediatly of any spilss, breakages, or injuries.
- Handle chemicals carefuly when working, mixing, or storing them.
